Oriental Kopi opened its first kopitiam in Johor Jaya, Johor, in December 2020, serving Nanyang-style kopi, tea and kaya toast with a modern twist. Its record-breaking egg tarts and long queues made it one of Malaysia’s most talked-about coffee shop names, and it has since grown to more than 30 outlets across Malaysia and Singapore. In January 2025 it launched its own charcoal-baked heong pheah in two flavours: Roasted and Musang King Durian.

Heong pheah, or “fragrant biscuit”, is one of Malaysia’s best-loved traditional pastries and is closely tied to Ipoh and Perak. A hand-crafted flaky shell wraps a sticky, golden maltose filling, and baking over charcoal gives it a deep, toasty aroma.

This version brings in Musang King, the durian Malaysians prize above all others. Known in Chinese as Mao Shan Wang, it is loved for its creamy, bittersweet richness, and here that durian flavour runs through the sweet maltose filling: a kopitiam classic meets the king of fruits.
