Thin crabstick strips prepared into a crisp, savoury snack. The pieces have a light, brittle crunch, with plenty of little curls and irregular edges to pick through.

Crispy crabstick is a familiar Malaysian festive jar snack, particularly around Chinese New Year. Shredding the crabstick into thinner pieces gives it a much crisper texture than the soft crabsticks used in cooking.

This ready-to-eat version is easy to serve. Open a packet over a plate to catch the smaller pieces, then put out as much as you want to share.

Enjoy it with tea, kopi or a cold drink, or add a handful to a mixed Malaysian snack plate. It gives a lighter seafood-style crunch alongside richer snacks such as salted egg fish skin.

The smaller bits at the bottom of the packet are useful too. Scatter a few over rice or noodles just before eating, keeping them away from steam and sauce until the last moment.
