Rempeyek is eaten across Malaysia and Indonesia, with different versions built around nuts, anchovies and fragrant seasonings. In Malaysian snack spreads it often sits beside murukku, kerepek and jars of biscuits, giving the table something distinctly savoury.

This ikan bilis and peanut version is ready to eat. The thin pieces break easily, so take a small handful and let the different textures do the work.

Serve some with kopi or teh tarik, or put a few pieces beside nasi lemak or a simple rice meal. It adds crunch without needing to prepare a separate side dish.
