Lingham’s story begins in Butterworth, Penang, in 1908. Mr Lingam, an Indian entrepreneur living in Malaysia, missed the flavours of home and started making chilli sauce with four simple ingredients: fresh red chillies, sugar, vinegar and salt. He began selling it from the docks, where it soon found fans among the British expatriates in Penang. The name “Lingham’s” is said to have come from the way a British customer pronounced “Lingam.” 

From those beginnings, Lingham’s became part of the Malaysian table. Its sweet, tangy chilli flavour works with the everyday food people actually eat: fried chicken, rice, noodles, spring rolls and whatever else is being passed around at dinner. It’s a familiar taste for many Malaysians, and a welcome one for anyone missing a little taste of home.
